Head Hottie: Lyra La Belle

What do you love about burlesque?

Everything. It changed my life! I didn’t start burlesque into I was 34 and I am in my NINTH year being a burlesque artist. Burlesque doesn’t take into consideration age, size or gender and it’s the most empowering art form ever! It has taken me all over the world and winning titles in my late 30s and now 40s. I have a community of glittery friends around the world and it enabled me to be the EXACT performer I was meant to be after years as a commercial dancer. It also made me love my body more than I did in my 20s.

What do you love about burlesque?

The creativity!  I live and breathe this insane industry and nothing charges me more than the rush of creating a new routine (either for myself or a class).  To me it is SO much more than simply performing on stage – I love the crazy detail in every move, beat, rhinestone and press stud that holds a routine together.

Describe your teaching style in three words:

Seductive, attitude and creative.

What class do you teach?

I specialise in props.  Anything from silk and ostrich feather fans, to isis wings and boas.  In my classes you’ll learn how to accentuate your curves and burlesque moves with the use of props – both classic and neo.

What do you love about burlesque?

I love the freedom of expression burlesque inherently supports. We are totally autonomous beings onstage, and are able to bring whatever we want to our stages. I also love the combination of storytelling and technical dance in such a short act duration, and I feel like our audiences are always open to and engaged with whatever story we choose to tell.

Describe your teaching style in three words:

Fun, flirty, foundational

What class do you teach?

Neo burlesque, where we focus on a variety of skills that are best utilised in “themed” story-based routines. There is always an overarching emphasis on stage presence and character development, though the other skills will vary depending on the term.

What do you love about burlesque?

I love seeing people dance in a sensual and embodied way. Burlesque embraces human sexuality as the beautiful, fun and accessible thing that it really is. Burlesque can exist to tell stories, make a statement or simply be lovely to watch. I love that it’s so versatile and that it invites you not to make any apologies for being who you are.

Describe your teaching style in three words:

Fun. Inclusive. Challenging.

What class do you teach?

This term I’m teaching chair techniques.
